Jeannette E. “Jeanne” Backhaus-Moe, 93, of Kewaskum, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2016, at The Kathy Hospice in the town of Polk, with her family at her side.
Jeanne was born Feb. 7, 1923, in Wautoma, the daughter of the late Chester and Beatrice (Douglas) Wilcox. On April 20, 1946, she was united in marriage to Howard Backhaus in Berlin. Howard passed away July 13, 1972. On March 29, 1980, Jeanne was united in marriage to Philip Moe at St. Lucas Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kewaskum. Philip preceded Jeanne in death Dec. 27, 2003.
Jeanne was a member of St. Lucas Lutheran Church in Kewaskum where she was involved in the Ladies Guild. She was also a member of Washington County Retired Educators, Delta Kappa Gamma — Alpha Beta Society, an honorary member of the Kewaskum Women’s Club and the Washington County Historical Society.
Jeanne attended grade school at Raymond Rural School, high school at Dafoe High School in Wautoma, Waushara Teachers College and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. She began teaching in 1941 at Sunnyside in Washington County. In 1944, she accepted a position at Kewaskum Elementary School as a seventh- and eighth-grade teacher. In 1950, she retired temporarily to raise their three children until they were of school age. She then continued teaching until retiring in 1985.
Jeanne enjoyed her many years of teaching and her healthy active years of retirement. The retirement years passed quickly doing voluntary work at St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Kewaskum Library Board. She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, genealogy, traveling and most of all being with her family and grandchildren. She will be missed by all who were blessed to know her. Those Jeanne leaves behind to cherish her memory include three children, Jody (Harry) Krueger of Kewaskum, Ann (Gary) Schneider of West Bend and Lyn (Vonda) Backhaus of Tomahawk; six grandchildren, Chad (Debbie) Krueger, Erin (Jason) Olsen, Jason Schneider, Matthew (Heidi) Schneider, Kaitlyn Backhaus (special friend Scott Wishart), Kortney Backhaus (fiancé Joe Pilecky); nine great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her two husbands and parents, Jeanne was preceded in death by her four brothers; a sister; four brothers-in-law; and four sisters-in-law.
Funeral services for Jeanne will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at St. Lucas Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kewaskum. The Rev. Troy Swenson will officiate and burial will follow at Lutheran Memorial Park in Kewaskum.
Jeanne’s family will greet relatives and friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service Sunday at the church.
