Rose M. Gross, 99

Rose M. Gross, 99, formerly of Port Washington, died Thursday, June 2, 2016, at Froedtert St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend.

She was born Jan. 30, 1917, in Mellen, the daughter of Anton and Katherine Berres Schaeffer. Rose grew up on the family farm in St. Michaels, near Kewaskum.

On Nov. 17, 1936, Rose married Edwin C. Gross of Port Washington at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Washington. For a time they farmed near Waubeka. They moved to Northwoods Road in Port Washington and then to Parknoll Lane for many years. Edwin preceded her in death Jan. 21, 2000. Rose lived at the Maple Crest Apartments for quite a few years after that.

Her husband was a commercial fisherman on Lake Michigan with the Bossler Brothers while Rose worked at Phillip Sales in Belgium and Kenro Corp. in Fredonia. Rose also worked a few years at Badger Outerwear in Port Washington. Rose took care of her family and enjoyed sewing when the children were young. She and her husband proudly worked their gardens and volunteered at the Pebble House for many years.

She is survived by her daughters, Kathleen (Ronald Hepponstall) Bossler of West Bend and Barbara Retzlaff of Lake Mills; nine grandchildren, Leslie (Mike) Swift, Deborah Bossler, Dale (Deborah) Bossler, Linda (Tom Voll) Van Ooyen, Kay C. (Frank) Vespalec, Greg (Betty) Retzlaff, Robyn Retzlaff, Dawn Brown and Scott (Lynn) Retzlaff; 25 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; her brother, John (the late Florence) Schaeffer of Waukesha; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Rose is preceded by her husband; sons-in-law, Kehlor Bossler and Robert Retzlaff; sisters, Marie and her husband Clarence Albinger, Eleanor Herriges and her husbands Frank Herriges and Peter Neckuty, and Ann Bruendl and her husbands George Bruendl and George Becker; and her brothers, Edward and his wife Ruth Schaeffer and Lawrence Schaeffer.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 6, at the Poole Funeral Home/Crematory, (203 N. Wisconsin St., Port Washington, WI). Deacon Tom Surges will officiate. Family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home prior to services. Entombment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Port Washington.
