Don was born in Thiensville on Feb. 23, 1931, the son of the late Edwin and Dora (nee Paske) Proefrock. He joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1953 during the Korean Conflict.
He married Merecedes “Mitzi” Hilgart on Aug. 6, 1955, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Washington. They were blessed with four children. Don enjoyed bowling and trap shooting. In his early years up in Carter, he liked to hunt and fish.
He was a shop foreman for JW Dickman for over 30 years. Don was a lifetime member of the American Legion Rose-Harms Post 355 and was past commander.
He was highly involved in tent rentals at the Post as well. Donald was a very proud veteran. He was a member of the Forty et 8, which is an invite-only club. Don and Mitzi loved going to Anchorage, Alaska, to visit the scenery and their son, Daniel. He was an avid walker, just loved to walk. His passion was to go to his grandchildren’s sporting events. Don was a devoted husband, loving dad and a dedicated grandpa. He was a soft-spoken man and was just a “Gentle Soul.”
Donald is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Mitzi; children, Daniel (Joanne), Sandra (Matt) Jones, Nancy (Robert) Poull and Dean (Michele); grandchildren, Anna and Dominic Proefrock, Nick (Laura) Kaddatz, Cara Jones, Casey (Susan) Haas, Jacob (Emily) Haas, Hayden and Elaine Proefrock; great-grandchildren, Henry and Grace Haas; siblings; Eugene (the late Beverly), Jerry (the late Darlene), Harvey (the late Jeanie) and Carol (the late Victor) Lentz; other relatives and friends.
