George Edson Smith, 90

George Edson Smith passed away on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016, with family at his side wishing him love and peace.

George was born in Harbor Beach, Michigan, on July 8, 1926. He spent his early childhood in Indiana and Michigan, where he graduated from the University of Detroit in 1948, the University of Michigan School of Graduate studies in 1952, and the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1960. In 1961, he partnered with the established law firm of Harry Amidon and started his 45 years of serving the Hartford community in all aspects of law. George was an active member of various civic organizations, including the Lions, Rotary and Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Board of the Hartford Historic Preservation Foundation, as well as the Medical Foundation of Hartford and the Hartford Foundation.

George is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Sandra (nee Esslinger); his daughters, Kirsten (Peter) Damrow, Karyn (Ron) Rothstein and Jennifer (Mark) Smith Hennes; and he dearly loved his grandchildren, Jordan (Brady) Damrow Frankenwitz of Kenosha, Allyson Rothstein of Denver, Taylor Damrow of Chicago, and Jack Hennes and Aleksandra Hennes of East Lansing, Michigan. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Popp of Seattle; brother-in-law, William (Pat) Esslinger; sisters-in-law, Heidi (Lyle) Karn of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and Marlene (Robert) Hughes of Homer Glen, Illinois. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

A celebration of George’s life will be held at the Schauer Arts and Activities Center (147 N. Rural St., Hartford, WI) on Jan. 12 from 4-7 p.m. in the Art Gallery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the History Room of the Jack Russell Memorial Library (100 Park Ave., Hartford, WI) or the School of the Arts of the Schauer Arts and Activities Center.
