Joseph "Joe" N. Weiss, 96, of West Bend, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the town of Polk.
He was born on Aug. 5, 1920, in Slinger, the son of the late Matt and Anna (nee Peters) Weiss. At an early age the family moved to West Bend.
Joe graduated from West Bend High School in 1938 and then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for 1.5 years. He served his country for three years with the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. Joe spent 2.5 years overseas from Africa, Ireland, England, France and Germany.
After military service, he was employed by Lip Ivo for 12 years.
Thereafter he was a sales representative for Sentry Insurance for 13 years and then had his own agency for 16 years until retirement in 1986.
Joe loved to sing— he was a member of Holy Angels Choir for 40 years and served as a trustee and treasurer for eight years. He also was in a barbershop quartet for 25 years called the Half Notes.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 75 years, Maybelle; four children, Joel (Pat) Weiss of California, Jeanne (Mike) Horan of Florida, Michelle (Dr. Warren) Piette of Chicago and Camille (Steve) Ritter of Muskego; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by a grandson, Tim Erchul; three brothers, Ray, Arnold and Robert; and five sisters, Armella, Lorraine, Margarite, Katherine and Marie.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Joe will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13, 2017, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in West Bend. The Rev. Jerry Repenshek will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
