Aleko D. Sotiriades,
Jan. 29, 1958 — June 4, 2017
Aleko (Alex) Dionysus Sotiriades, of Cedarburg, was born to eternal life while doing what he loved to do– cycling – on June 4, 2017, while on his way to meet his dearest childhood friend for breakfast in the East Side neighborhood where he grew up.
Alex was born on Jan. 29, 1958, in Milwaukee. Alex spent his childhood on Milwaukee’s East Side, biking city streets and parks, rebuilding motorcycle and automobile engines and running along the city’s beautiful lakefront. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a mechanical engineering degree, he applied his talents, interests and strong work ethic in a variety of senior engineering roles over a 30-plus year career. In his spare time, he designed rehabilitation equipment, in the hopes his work could help to realize his one goal, that all wheelchair-bound individuals could one day resume full physical mobility.
Alex was the precious husband, soulmate and best friend of Karyn (O’Connor), whom he married during a Caribbean sunset on the beach in Montego Bay, Jamaica, in June 1994. He was the adored, loving Daddy to his beautiful and beloved daughters, Ariahna and Alexania, whom he affectionately called his "Purple Butterfly" (Ari) and "Skooter" (Lexi).
Alex’s family was always his greatest passion. He was the short-order cook in the home and cherished daily opportunities to prepare made-to-order Mediterranean dishes for his family. He taught his girls about healthy eating, the importance of a strong, fitness-minded lifestyle and the power and value of academic knowledge and hard work.
Alex humbly knew something about everything, and friends and neighbors consistently sought his mechanical expertise. He cherished camping, fishing and outdoor adventures with Karyn, Ari and Lexi in beautiful natural spaces, especially Wisconsin’s lakes and rivers, the country’s national parks, Gulf Shores, Canada and Mexico. His vacation goal for the summer of 2018 was to take his family to explore the majestic Greek islands of his origins. Always a worker, Alex immersed himself in running, biking, skiing, home improvement and automotive projects. His favorite hobby was customizing his FJ Cruiser and Hodaka motorcycle. He could be found each weekend "wrenching" in the garage to the music of WMSE radio. He was active in FJ Summits’ annual trail runs, traversing the sand dunes and off-road terrain of the West and Midwest with friends and "copilots" Ari and Lexi, and participated in annual off-road Wheelin’ with Feelin’ rallies to raise money for March of Dimes. Alex was an avid and talented downhill skier, an active member of the Sitzmark Ski Club and enjoyed annual mountain ski adventures.
In addition to his wife and daughters, Aleko is survived by his brother Demetrius, his beloved Aunt Tessa Pope, numerous Maholias cousins, parents-in-law Diane and Alan O’Connor, brothers- and sisters-in-law Greg and Dorothy O’Connor and Kevin O’Connor and Kristen Bailey, niece and nephew Fiona and Griffin O’Connor, and many friends and colleagues.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Persephone "Nitsa" Sotiriades (née Maholias) and grandparents James and Maria Maholias, all from Milwaukee.
A service to celebrate the life of Aleko Sotiriades will be held on Monday, June 12, 2017, at Alliance Bible Church in Mequon– visitation begins at 3:30 p.m., with a memorial service following at 5 pm.
