Elmer was born on April 27, 1921, in the Town of Grafton, the son of the late Elmer J. and Elsie Viesselmann (nee Kroening). On May 29, 1921, Elmer would be baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Lakefield (Town of Grafton) and later be confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedarburg. Elmer was raised on the family farm on Lakefield Road in the Town of Grafton. In his teen years, Elmer worked at the Lakefield Creamery and later was also hired by his father-in-law, William Hennings, to work on the family farm on Port Washington Road in Grafton. Elmer and Norma later took over the dairy farm and continued to milk cows until 1984.
They would also "cash crop" until 1988, when Elmer’s eldest son, Richard, rented the farm from them for cash cropping, as well. In 2008, Elmer and Norma moved into the Harbor Cove Assisted Living in Port Washington.
Elmer was preceded in death by his wife Norma; brothers: Herbert and Louis; sisters: Laura (Robert) Kaul, Dorothy (Eugene) Hadler, and Ruth Mentzel. Elmer is survived by his children: Richard (Marie) Viesselmann of Wonewoc, Patricia (Ronald) Stifter of Saukville, David (Doreen) Viesselmann of Sheboygan and Peter (Kathie) of Cedar Grove; brother, Arthur (Marge) of Grafton and brother-in-law, Herbert Mentzel of Grafton. Visitation took place at the church on Friday from 5 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Interment took place at Lakefield Cemetery. Memorials to St. John Lutheran Church are appreciated, as Elmer was a member there.
