Judith Irene Stanier Lewis,
July 14, 1938 — Sept. 22, 2017
Judith Irene Stanier Lewis (Judie), born July 14, 1938, passed away Sept. 22, 2017, from cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Mary Stanier; husband, Dr. J. David Lewis; and sister, Janet Williams. She is survived by her sister, Elaine Hartswick; children, Jean Lewis (Michael Rudie), Joan Blomquist (Charles Blomquist), Joseph Lewis (Gabrielle Mead) and Janet Muth (Greg Muth); and grandchildren, David, Andrew, Isabel, Paul, Grace, James, Aichatou, Maggie and Mariana.
Judie grew up in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she was an organ and music education major. She and Dave married in 1960. For more than 40 years, she and her family lived in Brookfield and West Bend, where Judie shared her musical talents with hundreds of people as a public school music teacher, piano teacher, accompanist, musical director, choir director and church organist. She was also an active community member, serving in leadership positions and volunteering on a host of boards and nonprofit organizations, including the West Bend School Board, Musical Masquers, the American Field Service, the YMCA, the United Way and the West Bend Food Pantry. And she was a Mom extraordinaire, opening her home and heart not only to her own four kids, but to untold numbers of piano students, exchange students, neighborhood kids, and friends of all ages and circumstances.
Judie and Dave retired to Sarasota, Florida, in 2006. After Dave’s unexpected passing, she made a new life for herself in Sarasota, building a network of friends in the Cascades community, becoming actively involved at First Congregational United Church of Christ, volunteering as a reading tutor at a local elementary school, and again opening her home to a continuous stream of vacationing kids, grandkids and friends. Everywhere she went, Judie brought a smile and enthusiasm for life that was contagious and inevitably made the atmosphere more hopeful.
Funeral services will be held in Sarasota on Nov. 4 at First Congregational UCC and in West Bend, date and location to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Family Promise of Washington County (www.familypromisewc.org) or the Museum of Wisconsin Art (www.wisconsinart.org).
