Daphne Carney (nee Huber), 93, of Mequon, died peacefully in her sleep Jan. 15, 2019. Daphne was born in West Bend, on July 4, 1925, to Lawrence and Selma (nee Oelke) Huber. She was the eldest sister to Joanne and Gloria. The family later moved to Milwaukee where Daphne attended Washington High School and was salutatorian of her 1943 class. Upon graduation, Daphne enrolled in Milwaukee State Teachers College where she studied art, music and languages. It was at college where she met her first husband, Victor Duhnke, with whom she shared a lifelong appreciation for music, most notably jazz. Daphne was also an avid gardener, bird enthusiast and defender of social justice.
Daphne was preceded in death by her third husband, Cyril Carney, her second husband, Arthur Haack, and her first husband, Victor Duhnke, as well as daughters, Sibyl O’Brien and Margaret Herrick. Daphne is survived by sons, Eric (Amy) Duhnke, Seth (Cecile) Duhnke and Louise (Phil) Rew; stepdaughter, Patricia Carney; and grandchildren, Erin O’Brien, Colin (Tanya) O’Brien, Zachary (Stacy) Herrick, Lauren Andress, Layne Laughlin, Finn Turnbull and Grace Duhnke. She will also be greatly missed by great-grandchildren, Audrey O’Brien, Hayden Herrick, Imogene Herrick and Carter Howard, as well as many friends and family.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Unitarian Church North, 13800 N. Port Washington Road, Mequon. Memorials may be made to the Unitarian Church North.
