Patricia B. Herman, 77 |
April 9, 1941 -- Jan. 19, 2019
Patricia “Patti” Bart Herman, of West Bend, died of cancer Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at The Lodges at Linden-Grove in Waukesha at the age of 77.
She was born April 9, 1941, in Chicago, to the late Robert and Ruth (nee Sauerhering) Bart. She graduated from West Bend High School in 1959, and received a Bachelor of Science in journalism from Northwestern University in 1963. She married the late Eugene “Gene” Herman in 1973 in West Bend.
Patti worked at the West Bend Community Memorial Library for 25 years, retiring in 2004. She saw the library through many changes, including automation and a brand new building. In her retirement, she took on her favorite role: becoming Grammy to her only grandchild, Kate.
Patti loved her annual vacations to Door County with her children and their families, a vacation spot she had enjoyed since childhood. She found a calmness in being near the water in Door County, enjoyed beating her family at miniature golf and board games, and making her famous Chex mix for family to enjoy on every trip to Door County. She enjoyed reading, knitting, board games, going to the theater, playing mah jongg and bridge with friends, attending her granddaughter's plays, dance recitals and piano recitals, and spending time with her beloved family. “Family first” and “forever family” were her mottos.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Ruth Bart; her husband, Gene Herman; her brother, Dr. Robert Bart Jr.; and several of her closest friends.
She is survived by her children, Scott (Juliet) Herman of Waukesha and Lara Herman (Brett Balinsky) of Waunakee; her granddaughter, Kate Balinsky; her sister, Linda Karwath of Davenport, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Hartson Funeral Home of Hales Corners is serving the family. Memorials to Horizon Home Care and Hospice of Milwaukee, Lung Cancer Research Foundation, or Cancer Research Institute are greatly appreciated.
Patti's family would like to thank the incredible team of doctors, nurses and therapists at Froedtert Hospital and Cancer Center, the caring staff at The Lodges of LindenGrove, and the compassionate hospice team from Horizon Home Care and Hospice — all of whom provided wonderful care for Patti and showed such kindness to her family.
