Milwaukee/NARI reaches historic milestone
SPECIAL TO HOMES PLUS
MILWAUKEE Years ago, a small group
of 15 Milwaukee remodeling firms band-
ed together to promote high ethical stan-
dards for reliable, professional remodel-
ing services as members of the National
Home Improvement Council, later known
as the National Association of the Remod-
eling Industry.
Since then, that small
group has expanded to
more than 800 contractors,
suppliers and related indus-
try professionals, making
Milwaukee/NARI the
nations largest and most
respected remodeling trade
association chapter.
Milwaukee/NARI turned
50 years old last month.
The association has done a good job in
getting the message out to contractors
and consumers alike that
Milwaukee/NARI is an important
resource for them, said
Milwaukee/NARIs president, Diane
Ausavich, of Carl Krueger Construction
Inc. Contractors see the benefits of
working and networking with other con-
tractors. They see their business grow as
homeowners are aware of the importance
of working with a NARI contractor.
Gov. Scott Walker recognized the associ-
ations 50th anniversary in a letter that he
wrote to Milwaukee/NARI.
The Milwaukee/NARI Home Improve-
ment Council Inc. plays a critical role in
supplying homeowners with quality
improvements to their homes, in addition
to encouraging ethical conduct, profes-
sionalism, and sound business practices
in the remodeling industry, he said.
The original members established a
legacy that continues today. The
Wauwatosa-based organization conducts
skills and business training, certification
programs for members, runs programs to
encourage students to enter the trades
and sponsors public seminars.
Milwaukee/NARI provides educational
opportunities for consumers to learn how
to select and work with a contractor, what
the resolution process is if there is a
problem, and how to protect themselves
from illegitimate contractors, Ausavich
said. We also provide the opportunity
that if something does not work correctly
or the way it should, or if communication
breaks down between the contractor and
the homeowners, we do have options for
them to come to Milwaukee/NARI and
work through a mediation/arbitration
process to resolve any issues that arise.
Ken Skowronski has been a chapter
member for 49 of Milwaukee/NARIs 50
years. Hes served as its president, and is
past president of the national association
and the Milwaukee/NARI Foundation Inc.
Were very strong on consumer
rights, Skowronski said. Its our goal to
ensure the contractor does the job right,
the homeowner is satisfied, and help
resolve issues that come up during the
remodeling process.
Skowronski, owner of KS Remodelers
in Franklin, recalls the early efforts to
promote good practices and to reach out
to homeowners, educating them about the
remodeling process.
The association resulted because of
President Dwight D. Eisenhower estab-
lishing Operation Home Improvement, a
nationwide effort emphasizing the reha-
bilitation of existing houses rather than
new construction.
We started out with the home improve-
ment school in the auditorium at Kil-
bourn Hall, and after a very good and pos-
itive response, we established our first
home improvement show. People were
very eager to see how they could improve
their own home and save money.
Today, Milwaukee/NARIs annual home
improvement show in February is a four-
day event held at State Fair Park with
more than 325 exhibitors, how-to semi-
nars, presentations by celebrity designers
and professional chefs, and more.
We have so much interest in the shows.
It reaffirms that Milwaukee/NARI is suc-
cessful in helping and educating home-
owners on how to get their project done
correctly and the value of improving
their home, Skowronski said.
We provide many options for con-
sumers to make their residence or busi-
ness everything they want it to be, said
Ausavich, referring to helping those who
are in need by volunteering materials and
manpower in special projects, including
help for a critically ill child needing a
therapeutic playroom, an amputee need-
ing an accessible entrance to his home
and a family with quintuplets needing
more accommodations in their small
ranch, to name a few.
Milwaukee/NARI also promotes careers
in the industry through its educational
and charitable Milwaukee/NARI Founda-
tion Inc.
The foundation has provided more
than $110,000 in scholarships, tools, and
equipment for use by students and
schools in southeastern Wisconsin and
also established endowments at both Mil-
waukee Area Technical College and
Waukesha County Technical College,
Ausavich said. We help students learn
the trades so that they can be successful
members of the remodeling industry
moving forward.
