Waukesha Civic Theatre lights up city’s downtown

Waukesha Civic Theatre becomes more and more of a contributor to the renaissance occurring in downtown Waukesha. This summer, it is again offering its extensive program of theater arts education programs for kids and adults alike.

The offerings include dance, music, improv and acting lessons from ages 4 to19. (The tiny ones only have dance and music.) One adult class entitled Incredible Improv features ways to meet new people, gain confidence and just have fun working on performance skills. This course might also get you ready to audition for upcoming shows.

Another unusual course called "Lights, Camera, Action" involves making a personal video while learning the various aspects of filmmaking. Students will memorize and perform original scripts in one hilarious and intense week. Friends and family will be invited to view these original creations.

The students will get a chance to showcase their accomplishments in several venues: Aug. 20 will be performance day for the little ones, and Aug. 22 the students from 6 to 19. Aug 29 the adults will have their day to shine.

Costs for the courses vary from $65 to $245 depending on their duration. Discounts are given if you participate in more than one class.

Separate from the performances is the upcoming production of "Seussical Musical" with audition dates open to all on May 31, June 1 and June 2. Here’s another chance for you and your children to get involved in an activity that will reap rewards for meaningful summer activity and the excitement of an upcoming two-week run on the weekends of July 31 and Aug. 9.

There are two other summer shows on tap for summer viewing: "The Cemetery Club" as the last offering of the 2008-009 season, and "Cotton Patch Gospel," a delightful musical take on the gospel told with reverence and wit and a southern twist. WCT offered this show in 2005, and with four competent musicians and John Cramer himself leading the way with his infectious energy and enthusiasm, it was a phenomenon. Don’t miss this second chance to see it the weekends of July 10 or July 17.

Comedy Tonight, a popular Thursday night show, will return on June 18 for one more run. With tickets ranging from $4 to $8, it’s an inexpensive way to have a very good time.

So, take advantage of the offerings that await you this summer. Friday nights have become a good way to enjoy food, drink and music on the streets in downtown Waukesha, so why not end the evening with a show at Waukesha Civic?

Next year’s offerings look very promising and varied. The 2009-10 season includes "Light in the Piazza," the Agatha Christie thriller "And Then There Were None," "Crimes of the Heart," the musical "Bye, Bye Birdie," "The Kitchen Witches" and the traditional "Life with Father." Take advantage of subscription prices.
